Description
In this recording Elinor Frey explores the very first unaccompanied pieces for cello and who played them. To quote her: the questions that arose, however, have complex answers, not the least of which is determining what a violoncello is! Like all cellists, I had played the great solo works by J.S. Bach, but I wanted to research unaccompanied pieces from the Baroque before Bach or during his lifetime. Through this research I became part of a wonderful community of musicians and musicologists who are performing and studying early repertoire for the bass violin or violoncello.
