Flamboyance – The Sound of Change
Splendour, movement and change are at the heart of the compositions on this recording. The recording The Sound of Change explores the repertoire of the 14th and 15th centuries, a period in which European music – much like the Gothic architecture of the Flamboyant style of the time – focused on rich colours, expressive power and ornamental details. The programme spans more than a century, from the Italian Trecento to the early Burgundian period, and follows the development of polyphony between north and south, in sacred and secular contexts, at courts and chapels. Motets, chansons, madrigals, dances and sacred works by Landini, Ciconia, Dufay, Binchois and their contemporaries illustrate an ever-evolving repertoire in which devotion and passion, intellect and pomp coexist.
Performed by the Sollazzo ensemble, expanded to twenty singers and instrumentalists, this music is presented in a manner reminiscent of princely banquets and ceremonial contexts. Rather than treating the late Middle Ages as a distant historical epoch, the recording invites listeners to experience these sounds as a living, vibrant musical world.
