Description
Ignacio Jerusalem left Naples as a young violinist and rose, by the 1750s, to become maestro de capilla of Mexico City Cathedral, the most prestigious musical post in colonial Spanish America. There he forged a sound entirely his own: Italianate melodic warmth wedded to the ceremonial splendor of New Spain’s devotional life. This recording, largely world-première, gathers arias, sacred duets, and a dramatic Lamentation for Holy Friday drawn from cathedral archives in Durango and Mexico City.
